The Association of Maternal & Child Health Programs (AMCHP) is excited to share an update on our Fiscal Year 2023 appropriations efforts. We thank our many national partners for their support as we work together to improve the health and well-being of women, children, including those with special health care needs, and their families.
This year, AMCHP led several coalitions of national organizations in urging Congress to increase funding for federal maternal and child health programs in the Fiscal Year 2023 appropriations legislation. AMCHP government affairs staff directly led or supported Members of Congress in leading seven sign-on letters to the leadership of House and Senate Appropriations Subcommittees on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies. The federal programs highlighted in these letters included:
- The Title V Maternal and Child Health Services Block Grant;
- Surveillance for Emerging Threats to Mothers and Babies Network (SET-NET);
- Healthy Start;
- CDC’s Safe Motherhood and Infant Health portfolio of programs;
- Research on maternal health at the National Institutes of Health; and
- Programs newly authorized by the recent passage of the Maternal Health Quality Improvement Act and Rural Maternal and Obstetric Modernization of Services (Rural MOMS) Act.
Over 100 national organizations and academic institutions endorsed one or more of the sign-on letters, and dozens of lawmakers from both chambers and parties joined as signers of the letters led by Members of Congress. This far-reaching show of support highlights the urgency of improving maternal and child health in the U.S., eliminating long-standing and growing racial, ethnic, and geographic inequities in maternal and child health outcomes, and investing in the programs, policies, and people that will advance meaningful change.
We invite you to read the letters and learn more about AMCHP’s appropriations and other government affairs efforts by visiting www.amchp.org/government-affairs/.
