Screening for substance use during perinatal health care visits provides a unique opportunity to intervene in a positive way with women who use substances. Unfortunately, a large percentage of health care providers do not routinely screen pregnant and postpartum women for substance use. This brief describes the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) model for pregnant and postpartum women with substance use disorders and how to implement and integrate SBIRT into care delivery.
