Cutting-Edge Practice
The R.U.S.H. Initiative
State/Jurisdiction: National
Setting: Clinical Community School
Population: CYSHCN Families & Caregivers Medical & Public Health Professionals
Topic Area: Safe and Connected Communities Emergency Preparedness Care Coordination
NPMs:
Today, limited knowledge of a patient’s underlying special health needs (SHNs) leads to avoidable risks. If emergency responders knew about a young patient’s visible or invisible SHNs—including, as identified by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, physical, developmental, behavioral, or emotional challenges, disabilities and long-standing medical conditions—as well as comfort items, safe words, or that the patient needs mobility, communication, or breathing assistance, they would be able to more efficiently engage with less burden to collect clinical background during stressful moments.
During an emergency involving one or more SHN patients, the healthcare continuum benefits when responders have fast access to relevant details, as well as the ability to share them with receiving hospitals, leveraging existing investments like health information exchange. The R.U.S.H. Initiative combines an underlying interoperable registry technology with local clinical collaborations, empowering the full range of stakeholders who care for SHN patients. These include Fire, EMS and Public Safety professionals; Physicians, Nurses, and School and Occupational Nurses—with respect to the latter: even though the program is designed to address the needs of Children and Youth with Special Health Needs, the R.U.S.H. Initiative has no “age out” because the miracle of medicine helps kids with special health needs grow up to become adults with special health needs who likewise benefit from pre-arrival awareness.
The R.U.S.H. Initiative from Beyond Lucid Technologies joins America’s first statewide, Fire & EMS-interoperable registry of pediatric medical complexity, with local clinical partnerships to facilitate informed emergency response. Among the community and clinician partners in the R.U.S.H. Initiative are firefighters, medics of all certification levels, public safety officers, physicians and nurses of all relevant specialties, school nurses, parents of children and youth with special health needs (regardless of their age), and of course, the patients themselves.
