This module aims to provide an overview of key storytelling concepts in relation to maternal and child health (MCH), and to provide guidance, tools, and resources for MCH professionals to utilize storytelling to impact the policy process. This module pulls concepts from various fields including psychology, behavioral science, communications, and public health to support users in learning about and building skills in storytelling.

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the importance of storytelling and its role in the context of MCH

  • Articulate why storytelling is an effective tool to influence the MCH policy process

  • Identify the core components of effective storytelling

  • Explore how storytelling has been used to impact MCH policy and practice in the United States

  • Apply storytelling principles and best practices through practicing crafting a personal story


The Maternal Health Action and Resource Center (MHARC) is a program run by the National Institute for Children’s Health Quality (NICHQ) that provides capacity building assistance (CBA), training, and technical assistance (TTA) to State Maternal Health Innovation (MHI) and other Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) maternal health grantees. Our aim is to strengthen State MHI grantees’ abilities to improve maternal health outcomes and reduce the significant disparities faced by disadvantaged populations. MHARC also serves as a national resource center, sharing and disseminating information about evidence-based strategies and guidance.
