Congress Passes Reconciliation Package with Large Implications for MCH Populations

On July 3, Congress passed H.R. 1, a reconciliation package that is projected to increase the national debt by $3.9 trillion. This package includes some of the most significant health policy provisions to be made into law since the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and has the potential to significantly threaten the health of millions, including maternal and child health (MCH) populations and those already facing the greatest risks.

AMCHP is deeply concerned by the impact these policies could have on MCH populations.  These policy changes come at a time when the country continues to battle unacceptable infant and maternal mortality and morbidity rates. Further, these policies would place significant financial strain on states, forcing states to make difficult decisions about what services they can continue to offer, such as the life-saving postpartum Medicaid extension that as of February 2025, 48 states and the District of Columbia have adopted.

Disaster Preparedness Starts Here: Understanding the Pediatric Medical Home

Graphic from Pediatric Pandemic Network and American Academy of Pediatrics with text: Disaster Prepardness Begins in the Medical Home! Whether you are a pediatrician, family care provider, or comunity health nurse, you may be a medical home for a child and their family.

The Pediatric Pandemic Network (PPN) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recently launched a campaign that highlights the essential role of pediatric medical homes in disaster preparedness. It underscores the crucial role of pediatric medical homes in providing comprehensive care during and after emergencies while also enhancing community resilience.

Pediatric medical homes play a crucial role in developing personalized emergency plans for children, particularly those with complex medical needs. This is not only relevant for restoring routine care but also for addressing the emotional challenges that children encounter during crises.

Title V programs are positioned to share campaign deliverables (e.g., infographics, social media posts) to build awareness among networks of pediatricians, family care providers, community health nurses, and others serving as medical homes for children.
