Government Shutdown Staved Off through March 2025
December 21, 2024

After a tumultuous week of negotiations on multiple iterations of a bill to avert a government shutdown, Congress passed legislation to extend funding for the federal government through March 14, 2025. The short-term funding bill – known as a continuing resolution or “CR” – continues federal funding at fiscal year 2024 (FY24) levels and gives Congress more time to negotiate and pass legislation to fund the government for fiscal year 2025 (FY25). Among other provisions, it also included disaster relief funds and a few short-term health-related extensions, such as for community health centers, telehealth, and Family-to-Family Health Information Centers (F2F HICs).

Earlier in the week, a short-term bipartisan budget deal was released that also included reauthorizations for critical public health programs, such as federal support for state-based Maternal Mortality Review Committees (MMRCs) and programs for the surveillance, prevention, and treatment of sickle cell disease. Unfortunately, that iteration of the bill was never brought to the House floor for a vote.

The Association of Maternal & Child Health Programs (AMCHP) continues to lead partners and collaborate with congressional champions to secure robust funding for maternal and child health programs in FY25, including $1 billion for the Title V Maternal & Child Health Block Grant.
