Best Practices in Maternal and Child Health

AMCHP seeks submission for the Innovation Station — an upcoming online, searchable database of best practices in maternal and child health from around the country. Whether it’s an effective campaign to promote breastfeeding, an outstanding nurse-family partnership, or a proven early intervention program for young children, get the word out about your best practice.

Why Submit?
  • Share successes with your peers. Best practices will be featured in Pulse, AMCHP’s biweekly electronic newsletter.
  • Receive national recognition. Your state’s innovative program could receive a special award at the AMCHP annual conference.
What is a Best Practice?

AMCHP defines “best practices” as a continuum of practices, programs and policies ranging from promising to evidence-based to science-based. A best practice could focus on the health of women, adolescents, young children, families, or children with special health care needs. It could address mental health, data and assessment, financing, program integration, workforce development, emergency preparedness, family involvement, or another public health issue.

For example, a best practice may:

  • Improve care coordination for children and youth with special health care needs
  • Reduce lead poisoning through home visits
  • Develop an interagency application process for WIC, Early Intervention and Medicaid
  • Collaborate with school nurses to improve care for children with asthma
  • Successfully reduce the rate of adolescent suicide
  • Promote early intervention for hospitalized children
  • Build linkages between health and child care systems
  • Expand screening and intervention for depression in pregnant women
  • Link data to address infant mortality

The Best Practices Review Panel, made up of AMCHP members, staff and partners, will review submissions and determine if a practice meets the criteria for the Innovation Station.
